Nidra in Sanskrit means sleep. Yoga Nidra is an ancient practice that has the power to transform us simply by allowing the body to relax on all levels.
During Yoga Nidra, the body is allowed to sleep while the mind remains alert. In this state, Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra invites us to a place of deep calm, clarity and quiet. It allows us to drop effortlessly and compassionately into the parasympathetic state, or state of relaxation, where our body's own healing response takes over.
While it may appear that one is merely relaxed or taking a nap, our consciousness is actually functioning at a deeper level of awareness. Through this awareness we can find peace and relaxation, not only for the physical body, but also for the deeper emotional and mental systems, allowing for the release of subconscious tensions and tendencies that keep us from living fully. It is in this state that regeneration and revitalization can truly take place, and powerful intention setting and healing can happen. One 30-minute session can be equivalent to 2-3 hours of solid sleep.
All that is required during Yoga Nidra is to lie down and listen. Anyone, regardless of physical ability, age, beliefs, background or religion, may benefit from the practice. Yoga Nidra can be practiced in 20 - 45 minutes while lying down comfortably on a mat.
